Damn the Senate!

O Scio, Scio, you are so funny. After listening to most of these people speak, I really wonder how they convince people to vote for them. I don't get it. They look and act goofy as hell. Stumble over their words like drunks at the neighborhood pub. Don't make any sense half the time. Do they spray the air with some sedative when they go out and do public speaking? They are a gruesome lot and that is a compliment...
I agree that the legislation is pretty dumb, but I'm a little confused. Which terrorists are you referring to? The Sunni insurgents who want to kill Shiites? The Shiite militias that are ethnically cleansing neighborhoods of Sunnis, and are in bed with the Maliki government? The dwindling Al Qaeda foreigners who are being marginalized by the other players in the civil war? All of the above?
Every one of them. By mostly I was thinking the Al-Qaeda types. Bunch of poufs, they are.
Our withdrawal would give each one of those groups a free hand to carry out their violent goals. If we pull out of Iraq, we'll just be fighting again in a few years. Most likely in the same place.
I have a grandfather named Kasim..lol!

But if March 2008 is the total withdrawal date, then the Senate and President should demand more cash and troops to settle the job before the deadline, correct?
haha, I knew I'd offend somebody. I tried thinking of a name that might not be toooo common. Or at least, one that I didn't hear too often.

More resources? Dare I say an even greater escalation? Of course in a sensible environment that is what would happen...but we've got Democrats in control of Congress now.
I would think both sides would swallow their pride and do what they have to do to meet their objectives before March 2008, Democrats, Republicans and Liberals alike.

It is America's objectives that need to be met, not the international community. However, such objectives need to be met according to international law and without reckless abandon towards their own countrymen back home.

about the name, next time just use Saddam or Osama...lol!

less chances someone would be offended....or Gaddafi, even...

You're right. The lack of leadership being shown in this country is sickening. The majority in both houses are so bent on revenge for the decade of republican majority that very little is being accomlished. Unfortunately, the Dems can't realize that all they're doing is making its' citizens even more apathetic.

Maybe that's what they want? The less people that vote the more the pols can get away with.

What are the objectives to be accomplished before pulling out? To end the civil war between the Sunni and Shia? To support the Shiite-dominated government until its army can dominate the Sunnis?

I'm not alone in not really understanding the military mission anymore. The Dems aren't trying to stoke apathy; they're trying to take advantage of American impatience with this increasingly muddled, unclear, and expensive operation, and Americans' desire to give some focus to other issues. This is how they won the 2006 midterms, and this is how they'll try to win the presidency next year.
the objective is to turn the Iraqis into real people, who vote and get along with their neighbors despite differences of religion or the succession of the caliphs. Protestants and Catholics do it just fine nowadays, Muslims can do it too. When we don't have to worry about a Sunni and Shiite getting into a shooting argument over their faith, then we can call Iraq a success. That takes a strong gov't there, one that is going to have a commitment to law -- no preference for Sunnis or Shia. It takes the removal of forces opposed to this goal, namely Al-Qaeda and some of the militias (both Sunni and Shiite).
It is a long process and we are unfortunately not prepared to deal with it on a national level. We have too many people who don't understand how the world works and still believe in democracy.
Personal accountability has gone the way of the Chinese Dolphin, much cherished but picked apart over the years until we have been left with a nanny government and a dependent populace. Americans don't get it. It's up to America, not the federal gov't, to solve our problems. It's not the gov't's war, it's ours. We all have stake in the outcome.
